Stephanie Laing is a kick ass producer with an amazing list of credits. People love working with her. She’s also a single mom to three awesome kids. Recently she became a blogger, sharing her stories from producing on the road and being a single mom on Put Your Pretty On. As if all that wasn’t enough, she’s found time to write for Yahoo Travel and even direct.

A few weeks ago, I got to see a cast and crew screening of Trouble and the Shadowy Death Blow starring Tony Hale. The short is Stephanie’s directorial debut. It was awesome. I’m soo proud of her. Stephanie has been working in the entertainment business since she was 16 years old. I’m not the first blog to gush about her, Refinery 29 wrote about what a badass she is! This is so personal because I’ve experienced first hand how great she is at anything she puts her mind and heart to. I first worked for Stephanie at Tracey Takes On. After that I joined her to start up a dot.com…back when they called them dot coms. 😉

Stephanie believed in me and helped me see what I was capable of. Incredibly encouraging and always on point, she is a dream boss.

She’s also super gracious and has taken some time out of her crazed schedule to give a little glimpse into her new career moves and her inspirations.

TAM: When I worked with you, you pushed me to do my best every day, and you wouldn’t settle for less. It was intense. I’m so grateful for that time and all the responsibility that you gave me. I learned so much from working with you. Was there someone early in your career that showed you what you were made of?

STEPH: I’m thankful to have spent the early days of my career with Tracey Ullman. She was the perfect example of a strong woman who, along with her husband and business partner, wrote and produced their own shows, held the ownership rights and sold the episodes internationally.

TAM: It seems like you’ve hit a new chapter in your career, adding to your Producer credits: writing, blogging and directing. Did anything specific happen to push you out of your comfort zone?

STEPH: I’m sure my divorce and move to NYC pushed me out of my comfort zone. Being a single mom pushes me out of it everyday, so by extension I push myself creatively. I believe that being afraid or scared is when the magic happens.

TAM: You wear many hats, yet you keep your cool and you never forget to laugh. What inspires you daily to be such a badass?

STEPH: Most of the time I don’t feel very badass, I feel like I’m just getting up everyday and dealing with life, ‘putting my pretty on’. And I believe in the power of laughter. We all live insane lives and laughter keeps us balanced.

TAM: Is there someone that you’re soo proud of today that you want to give a shoot out to?

STEPH: I’m very proud of Dana Daeche. She’s the Associate Producer of Veep. She started as my assistant three years ago and has just been great. She’s very very good at her job.

Stephanie Laing, you are an inspiration! I’m soo proud of you!
